5 Must-Have Modern Furniture Pieces

Making a place feel like home is no easy task. First, you have to find a house or apartment that fits your needs while staying in your budget. Next, you’re supposed to decide on a design concept. Finally, you start filling your new digs with furniture to match that direction. If you’re here, it sounds to us like you’ve found the place (congratulations!), you’ve decided on a look and feel (modern), and you’re ready to start shopping for some furniture.

If you’re not quite sure where to begin when it comes to choosing furniture items for your house or apartment, you’re not alone. It can be daunting! Luckily, we are here to help with a few tips, tricks, and recommendations.

Modern Design

Because modern furniture designers tend to implement a lot of wood into their pieces, it shouldn't come as a surprise that our five favorites feature the classic material in one way or the other. This consistency makes it easy for you to mix and match the items throughout different rooms in your house or apartment, should you choose to follow our lead (which, we think you should!).

Here are our five favorite must-have unique pieces of modern furniture:

unique wooden stool side table in light gray

The first piece we love is by KILO, a Dutch designer whose goal is to create a new generation of heirlooms through its furniture. This piece doubles as both a stool and side table, making it truly unique! Perhaps the thing we like most about this one is the fact that it is colored only on the top of the disc and widest parts of the legs. This feature allows the natural wood color to peek through. Keep things sleek with soft grey or black, or add a pop of color with either the pewter or sunflower option. No matter which you choose, this piece of modern furniture will have all your friends asking about it.

Next on our list is something similar to the KILO VOLT, yet ever so different. The KILO BAR also doubles as a stool and side table but catches the eye in an uncommon way. The top of these stools/tables have four lines of natural birch plywood showing in a "criss-cross" type look, but the lines are just asymmetrical enough to keep you guessing. Our suggestion? Pair two of these with two of the KILO VOLTs to use as stools. Alternate them around a kitchen table, and you've got a unique setup that is quite aesthetically pleasing.

cube side table with empty middle for storage

Moving on from the kitchen to the bedroom, we want to provide you with a piece of modern furniture that is also very practical. Meet the KILO JOULE side table! This table is distinctive from others you see in the market because its panels appear to jut out of one another. That feature not only makes it funky but protects items from falling off the top. Standing about 15.7” tall, the table is the perfect height for that bedside table you’ve been searching for. Place a modern lamp on top and stack your favorite books on the bottom, and you've got yourself a sleek setup for nighttime reading.

side table with wooden round top and metal white cross cross base

Off we go to the living room! Puik furniture is owned by Freek Claessen and Daan Gescher, two individuals who had backgrounds in production and sales but a shared passion for art and design. This particular table comes in two sizes, one being a bit taller and the other sitting lower to the ground, making it a little wider. The metal legs and wooden top create a beautiful blend of contemporary and modern furniture design, respectfully. Placing the "normal" size next to your favorite lounge chair or the "low" size next to your couch makes for an excellent spot for the wine glass you deserve after a long day!

low rectangular wooden coffee table with white edge

We promised you tips and tricks, and we’ve got them! One of the most important things you can do when decorating a house or apartment is to choose a focal point, whether it be a painting, a rug, or a piece of furniture. This unique item will be the piece you decide to compliment when you choose everything else, from a lamp to a glass bowl. Nothing fits the role of a focal point better than the KILO CALORIE coffee table.

This table's birch plywood is a prime example of modern Dutch design. The thing that makes it most unique, though, is its height. Sitting just lower than 2 feet to the ground, this coffee table is inspired by the Japanese Kotatsu tables, which are heating tables covered with a blanket that you drape over yourself to stay warm. While the KILO CALORIE is not heated, it is the perfect place to light a few candles and gather around with friends to play a card game, do a puzzle, or simply chat. You’re sure to find your zen with this modern and eye-catching piece.

Nowadays, it’s tough not to look at a catalog, see a room set up, and decide, “I want that!” However, your space should be uniquely yours, which is something that we at Uniek Living understand and encourage.
